Issues

Vision: Tacoma is a progressive, attractive, international city that is well regarded for its natural setting and diverse population.

It’s time to start a new chapter in Tacoma’s renaissance and plan for the future. Our city of 200,000 residents is projected to grow by 50% in the next 30 years. We all want a city that is safe, vibrant and family-friendly.  A city that provides economic opportunity for people from all walks of life, cherishes our unique neighborhoods and makes good use of our urban waterfront.  Let’s work together to make Tacoma a city of choice.

Here’s how we can make it happen:

RETAIN AND CREATE JOBS

  • Support and nurture existing businesses of all sizes
  • Remove barriers in order to attract private investment
  • Develop a transportation plan that connects our neighborhoods to each other, our downtown core and our waterfront
  • Position Tacoma as a leader in health care, clean energy, technology and the creative arts

MAKE EDUCATION A CIVIC PRIORITY

  • Create a task force to improve high school graduation rates
  • Update our library system to provide access when our residents most need it
  • Pursue partnerships with the private sector to attract resources for students
  • Continue to support early childhood education programs

PROTECT AND NURTURE OUR ASSETS

  • Beautify our unique neighborhoods
  • Preserve our historic buildings and structures
  • Activate and better utilize our urban waterfront
  • Maintain our parks and open spaces

RAISE TACOMA’S PROFILE

  • Use the role of mayor as Tacoma’s regional, national and international ambassador
  • Refine our Sister Cities program
  • Prepare for August 2010 and June 2015 – the dates of the US Amateur and US Open golf tournaments
  • Improve collaboration with state and federal legislators to secure more funding for local projects
